This Week’s UCLA Bruins Game

  • The 2023 UCLA Bruins football season is over.

UCLA Channels

As for 2023, some games will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. However, during conference play, Fox, ABC, and ESPN will carry most of the load.

For example, in 2022, only UCLA’s conference opener and the school’s three non-conference tilts to open the season were shown on the Pac-12 Network. Five of the eight remaining league games were showcased on Fox while FS1 broadcast one contest, and ESPN had two on its channel.

A wild card type of situation does exist for non-conference games that are played away from home as the Pac-12 Conference does not own those broadcasting and streaming rights. For example, the team’s Sun Bowl game a year ago was on CBS while UCLA’s 2023 regular-season contest at San Diego State will also be on CBS.

2024 and Beyond

Once the Bruins join the Big Ten in 2024, they will go under that conference’s broadcast deal, which consists of games being shown on CBS, NBC, Peacock, and the Big Ten Network as well as on Fox and FS1.

UCLA Football

UCLA is a proud program although it has not reached its own lofty expectations in some time, last winning a conference championship in 1998, when the Pac-12 was still known as the Pac-10. That was the team’s 17th league title while it has one national title to its name, which was achieved in 1954.

The Bruins went through an especially rough patch from 2016-2020, recording five straight losing seasons and going 20-36. However, head coach Chip Kelly has started turning around the program. After posting 3-9, 4-8, and 3-4 records his first three campaigns at the school, the 2021 Bruins went 8-4 while their 2022 counterparts compiled a 9-4 mark.

Those who are expected to contribute most on the defensive side of the ball for the 2023 Bruins include linebackers Laiatu Latu and Darius Muasau while a lot is expected of freshman quarterback Dante Moore, who many believe should get the snaps to start the season.

UCLA enters the campaign unranked in the AP and USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Polls but is in the “also receiving votes” category in both.

Rose Bowl

Since 1982, UCLA has played its home games at the Rose Bowl, a facility that is 25 miles from campus and that is famous for the bowl game by the same name that is played there.

They had shared the Memorial Coliseum with USC prior to then. UCLA does have an 11,700-capacity track and field facility on campus, Drake Stadium, but that is too small for the crowds that the football team garners.

Other UCLA Sports

UCLA has one of the nation’s top athletics departments, only trailing Stanford in total NCAA championships with 121 entering the 2023-24 school year. The 121st was claimed on May 6, 2023, when its men’s volleyball team defeated two-time defending champion Hawaii, 28-26, 31-33, 25-21, 25-21, in the title match. That was the program’s 20th while UCLA’s women’s volleyball team has four titles.

Of course, UCLA’s men’s basketball team is one of that sport’s most prestigious, and it has secured the national championship trophy on 11 occasions, including 10 in a 12-year span from 1964-75 with the 11th coming in 1995. That squad and UCLA’s women’s basketball and gymnastics and men’s and women’s volleyball teams play at historic Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA’s softball program is also highly revered within its sport, and those Bruins have won the Women’s College World Series 12 times, including four this century, in 2003, 2004, 2010, and 2019. Meanwhile, the school’s other diamond sports team, its baseball squad, has one national title, claimed in 2013.

Two other teams have recorded double-digit title totals: men’s tennis (16) and men’s water polo (12). On the women’s side, gymnastics and water polo are tied for the second-most championships behind softball with seven apiece.

Meanwhile, UCLA’s women’s soccer team won the school’s 120th title, taking that trophy to Westwood in 2022.

FAQs

Who is UCLA’s biggest rival?

USC is unquestionably UCLA’s biggest rival, partially because they are only separated by 15 miles. The teams are also in the Pac-12 together and will both move to the Big Ten for their respective 2024 campaigns. They meet in a rivalry showdown every year. In 2023, USC will host that matchup on November 18.

Why is UCLA leaving the Pac-12?

Unsurprisingly, most view UCLA’s decision to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten to be financially based as the television money in their new league will far surpass what it would have earned in the Pac-12. That financial surplus is also expected to more than compensate for the much greater travel costs in the Big Ten.
