Villanova Wildcats Basketball

When college basketball fans in the United States start working on their March Madness brackets during each NCAA Tournament season, they often think about the Wildcats of Villanova University making the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, Final Four, and perhaps even taking the championship.

Men’s Wildcats Basketball

Since 1939, the Villanova Wildcats men’s basketball team has been a fixture of the NCAA Tournament. It is an established athletics institution with 40 tournament appearances and four championships at the national level.

As part of the Big East Conference, which happens to be one of the most active in terms of producing NBA talent, Villanova University has run a basketball program since 1920. The first NCAA season for the Wildcats was played in 1939, and the team is also part of the new Philadelphia Big Six (formerly Big Five) college athletics conference.

The Wildcats have been getting sports media buzz since the 2006 draft of Kyle Lowry, who famously boosted the Toronto Raptors to become the first Canadian team to win an NBA championship in 2019. But the reality of Villanova University’s basketball program is that it has achieved 78 winning seasons as of 2023.

Women’s Wildcats Basketball

The women’s basketball program at Villanova still has some catching up to do. The female Wildcats have been around since the early 1970s, but the program did not become truly competitive until joining the Big East conference in 1982.

This was when they became managed by legendary coach Harry Perretta. He got the Wildcats into the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament brackets.

Coach Perretta completed his amazing 43-year run with the Wildcats in 2020. The team is now coached by former guard Denise Dillon, who played from 1992 to 1996.

Since Dillon took over coaching duties of the women’s program, the Wildcats have participated in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament organized by the NCAA. It also made the NCAA Tournament’s round of 32 during the 2021-2022 season.

One of many goals that Dillon has set for the Wildcats is to enter the NCAA Final Four. The team has not reached despite coming very close to doing so under Perretta about a dozen times.

Wildcats Rivalries

Wildcats used to play their most intense games against other Catholic universities in the Big East. But that has changed over time thanks to various games against the Georgetown University Hoyas that were highly disputed in the early 2000s.

Now that the men’s Hoyas are coached by NBA Hall of Legend member Patrick Ewing, the Wildcats have an even stronger rival. This is particularly true when games are played at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

College basketball analysts often praise the Villanova University program for the way it has been efficiently managed for more than a century. When the annual Hoops Mania event is held on campus to celebrate a new season, students can count on concerts headlined by major artists such as French Montana and Whiz Khalifa.

Other Villanova Sports

The Wildcats are popular for more than just their basketball team. Here are other sports that they participate in.

Football

You can watch their college football games and college bowl matchups on the same channels as the basketball games. That is, Fox, CBS, CBSSN, FS1, FS2, ESPN, and ESPN2.

Other

Other than the football and basketball teams, the school also has athletes competing in men’s lacrosse, track and field, cross country, and swimming and diving. These games are normally aired on CBS, CBSSN, and Fox Sports channels.
