Vidgo is the new kid on the live TV streaming block: a mid-level service that offers a large number of channels for a reasonable price. Its focus on college sports, family-friendly programming, and Spanish-language channels is allowing it to carve out a niche in a crowded industry.

In a hurry? Vidgo is probably the simplest streaming service around. It offers 85+ channels for $55 per month. There are no add-ons so if the channel lineup is good for you, you are ready to go. Note that it doesn’t offer a cloud DVR but you can try it risk-free for a month for just $10 to see if it’s right for you!

Vidgo CEO Shane Cannon says “we play in a different sandbox.” One way they do that is by targeting a different demographic.

Unique among online live TV providers, Vidgo offers prepaid accounts through local wireless retailers. This means no credit card or bank info is required. Together with a solid base of Spanish-language channels, this makes Vidgo a great service for first-generation Latin American immigrants.

Read on to find out if Vidgo might be the right streaming service for you.

Vidgo Overview

ProsCons
✅ Great value for college and pro football❌ No cloud DVR
✅ Unique Social TV feature❌ No premium channels
✅ Solid Spanish-language plan❌ Mediocre apps

Vidgo works like most streaming services: you pay a monthly fee, they supply TV channels you can watch, and typically some features to enhance the viewing experience.

But instead of receiving shows via a physical cord or satellite dish, you receive them over the internet. If you’re reading this, you probably already have internet service and a screen to view content on, so you have everything you need to get started with an internet streaming TV provider.

Vidgo simplified its subscription plans about a year ago so that there was just an English package ($55 per month) and a Spanish package ($30 per month). They have since divided the English plan into the Plus ($55/mo) and Premium ($79.95/mo) plans. (See details on the Premium plan.)

The Plus package features roughly 90 channels — typical cable channels like Disney, Discovery, and FX. And the Spanish package has over 25 Spanish-language channels from the US, Mexico, Central and South America, and Spain.

Vidgo is the only streaming TV service to include all the NCAA channels in its base plan: ACC, Big Ten, Longhorn, Pac 12, and SEC. Plus it includes ESPNU as well as the pro channels NFL Network and NFL Redzone. This makes it a great choice for football fans.

But sports and Spanish aren’t all Vidgo has going for it. It also has tons of kids and family-focused channels, including educational content, classic TV shows, and wholesome movies. It also has a slate of news channels although they do skew to the smaller and more conservative.

However, Vidgo’s plans are a little short in the bells and whistles department. This may be a plus or a minus for you, depending on what kind of viewing experience you’re going for.

So, the first thing you’ll notice is the lack of any kind of tiers of service, add-ons, or even premium channels. That’s because Vidgo keeps its offerings simple.

This is not the five-star resort with massive suites, private patios, and turn-down service. But it’s not Motel 6, either, and if you’re just looking for some good entertainment at a decent price, you may have found what you’re looking for.

Vidgo User Experience

For its price, Vidgo offers as good a live TV channel lineup as you will find. But a streaming service is about more than that. Below we look at Vidgo’s user experience.

User Interface

Vidgo’s interface, sad to say, is notoriously uneven. The mobile apps generally present a fairly smooth and intuitive experience. But the live TV interface is no-frills and somewhat clunky.

If you like simplicity, nothing but the bare essentials, this will be a breath of fresh air for you. If you’re used to other services like FuboTV, which offer slick and user-friendly interfaces, you may find the Vidgo interface has sent you back to cable.

Given all that, the search feature is surprisingly responsive. And channels are at least filtered into a few broad genres for easier browsing. Many of the worst complaints about the user interface describe bugs and issues that have been long since fixed. So if that’s your biggest concern, it’s definitely worth a try.

Vidgo Football
Vidgo offers NFL Network and NFL RedZone in its base plan.

DVR and On-Demand Content

Vidgo has no cloud DVR feature. They say one is “coming soon,” but you should know they have been saying that since 2018.

They have added a couple of features that may compensate. First, you can watch missed shows or events for up to 3 days (72 hours) after they originally aired, so if you’re just not home when the game or episode you wanted was on, you still have a few days.

The second is called Timeshift, and it lets you rewind, pause, or skip back to the beginning of shows or live sports.

If that doesn’t give you enough flexibility, there are third-party options available, such as Stremium, which for $5/mo gives you 25 DVR hours through a separate app. You can also install your own local DVR at home.

Similarly, Vidgo offers no on-demand library. However, channels that have apps or websites that support TV Everywhere (see below) do have on-demand content available.

Multiple User Support

Vidgo subscribers can watch on up to 3 devices at a time, with no conditions or limits. This means you on the train, your spouse at the office, and your kid on the bus can all watch something different on your phones or tablets with no conflict.

The service does not support multiple profiles, however. So you’ll have to strike a deal to divvy up the favorites slots.

Social Watching

Vidgo’s social features are unique and innovative. Social TV — which is only available on mobile devices, not the TV app — lets you watch with others in a digital chatroom session called a “hang.”

Several other services have group watching for friends and family, but only Vidgo lets you create or join public hangs to exchange comments and opinions, memes, gifs, or reaction clips.

You can also create private hangs for friends or family, or simply turn off Social TV altogether.

TV Everywhere

Vidgo’s TV Everywhere support definitely helps compensate for spotty local network coverage and the lack of native on-demand content. It’s a little off-brand from the view-in-the-now vibe you get from the lack of DVR and on-demand, but that’s okay.

Vidgo supports an impressive 30+ channels via TV Everywhere:

  1. A&E
  2. ABC
  3. ABC News
  4. American Heroes Channel
  5. Animal Planet
  6. beIN Sports
  7. Big Ten Network

Vidgo Streaming Devices

Vidgo Hallmark Android
Watch Hallmark and other family-channels with Vidgo on all your mobile devices.

Vidgo doesn’t offer as many options for hardware as other services, but they accept all the standard ones.

HDTVs With Chromecast

The first thing you should know is that Google Chromecast is a small device that plugs into a TV (or is built-in) to allow it to receive streaming video from your Android device or Chrome browser.

You can plug an external Chromecast device into any modern TV with an HDMI port, which is pretty much any flatscreen HDTV. This allows Vidgo to work on any TV with an HDMI port.

Other TV Devices

Other ways to watch Vidgo on your TV are:

  • Roku
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Apple TV.

You can also watch on any smart TVs that support the Android TV standard.

Mobile Devices

  • iOS
  • Android
  • Safari
  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Edge.

Not Supported

  • Most smart TVs (natively)
  • Xbox One
  • Playstation
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Facebook Portal
  • Echo Show.

Who Is Vidgo Good For?

Spanish-speakers

First up, Vidgo is great for native Spanish-speakers or anyone who enjoys Spanish-language programming. The only competition for their Spanish plan comes from Sling TV, which has a lot of options, and FuboTV, which has a similar plan but that is more sports-oriented.

College Sports Fans

NCAA fans, your TV provider has arrived in Vidgo. But even pro fans should take note. No other streaming service provides NFL Redzone in their base plans. NFL fans will, however, miss out on CBS, which they can get via antenna or Paramount+.

The biggest drawback for sports fans is that Vidgo lacks regional sports networks (RSNs). This isn’t a problem for football fans but MLB, NBA, and NHL fans will miss out on the home team’s games. If this is important to you, check out FuboTV and DirecTV Stream.

Families

If you’re looking to sit down to watch something with the kids and not get into an embarrassing discussion from an innocent question over an inappropriate comment, gesture, or situation, look no further.

Wholesome, inoffensive, lighthearted entertainment is Vidgo’s bread and butter. From Little House on the Prairie to My Three Sons, old-fashioned Westerns, classic romances, and high adventure abound.

News Junkies

Vidgo has the highest number of right-leaning news sources of any service. DirecTV Stream, for example, is the only other service that carries One America News. And i24 News, a pro-Israeli news channel, is a Vidgo exclusive among American streaming services.

Together with NewsMax, Fox News, and NewsNation, it is definitely a compelling package for those who find modern television to be on the whole far too liberal.

Vidgo Alternatives

There are a lot of other streaming services that will appear to different viewers.

Philo

philo logo

Nobody beats Philo for sheer price — there just isn’t a multichannel service cheaper than its $25/mo. The trade-off is that it provides absolutely zero sports channels, Spanish-language channels, and local network affiliates — literally none. What’s more, BBC World is its sole news source.

On the plus side, Philo has unlimited DVR and options for a few premium channels. See our Philo review for more information.

Sling TV

Sling TV Logo (2021 100x50)

Sling TV is Vidgo’s closest competitor. At $35 per month for either of their base packages, they’re undercutting Vidgo by quite a lot. They offer a good selection of channels including network affiliates but they do offer substantially fewer channels.

Their add-on system makes Sling TV easy to personalize. But it can also cause your price to rise substantially. Learn more in our Sling TV review.

FuboTV

fubotv logo

If you’re a serious sports fan and don’t mind paying more, FuboTV is where it’s at. Starting at $64.99/mo, it’s pricier than Vidgo, but fully a third of their 100+ channel lineup is pure sports. And you can upgrade to get even more.

But FuboTV is also an excellent all-around streaming service with a great interface. Our FuboTV review has all the details.

Hulu + Live TV

hulu logo

Hulu + Live TV solid cable-replacement service, you get the industry-leading on-demand library as well as 85+ live TV channels for $64.99/mo. You can only watch on 2 devices at a time, but it comes with 50 hours of cloud DVR storage. It’s got a little bit of everything, like a scaled-up version of Vidgo.

No one beats Hulu + Live TV as an overall entertainment package. Find out more in our Hulu + Live TV review.

Other Services

The other major streaming services are DirecTV Stream (formerly AT&T TV), which features the Choice Plan at $84.99/mo for full access to pretty much every RSN in the nation. And YouTube TV offers over 85 channels for $64.99/mo.

Video offers a low-cost way to stream basketball.

Is Vidgo Worth It?

Back in Vidgo’s day, “If you didn’t like what was on the TV, you just waited. None of this DVR, on-demand, binge-watching stuff. No sir,” this streaming service says. “We are going to fire up the wayback machine and do TV the way it’s supposed to be. And if you kids don’t like it, well, you can go watch Press Your Luck on Game Show Network!”

Okay, we’re kidding. But there is definitely a market out there for people who don’t want or need all the bells and whistles or 150-200 channels. People who used to be satisfied with the $40-50 basic cable package and don’t quite understand how they ended up with a bill three times that. People who like sports, news, and reruns of classic shows.

So, to sum up, Vidgo’s lack of features is definitely going to be a dealbreaker for some. But if the idea of no DVR doesn’t make you cringe, you should check them out. It’s only $10 for the first month!

FAQ

Can you get local channels on Vidgo?

In most areas, Vidgo provides you with the local affiliates for ABC and Fox. Whether you get one or both depends on where you live and whether those stations have agreements in place with Vidgo. If so, you’ll see the networks in your channel guide. Otherwise, you’ll want to invest in an antenna or upgrade to another streaming service.

Is Vidgo live TV?

Yessiree Bob! Vidgo provides just 100% all-natural guaranteed fresh live and in-person TV. Joking aside, yes, Vidgo is a live TV streaming service, with linear channels just like cable or satellite TV. It is not video on demand (VOD) like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

What is the Vidgo Premium plan?

As of October 8, 2021, Vidgo divided its English plan into two: Plus and Premium. The Plus plan is pretty much the same as the original English plan with roughly 90 channels for $55 per month. The Premium plan comes with more channels (112+ claimed but only 102 listed) for $79.95 per month.

The additional channels include American Heroes Channel (AHC), beIN Sports (removed from English), CMT Music, Cooking, Destination America, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, Great American Country, MTV Classic, MTV2, Nicktoons, RFD-TV, Stadium (removed from English), and The Cowboy Channel.

This seems like a strange move. Perhaps it is meant to keep the cost of the Plus plan down. We don’t see why anyone would choose the Vidgo Premium plan when both Hulu + Live TV and FuboTV offer better plans for $15 less. It’s even the same price as the FuboTV Elite plan, which comes with over 160 channels including all local channels and a good selection of RSNs, 1,000 hours of cloud DVR, and unlimited screens.

Will you ever offer HD and 4k. On it. As Nexflixs offers you different. Prices for it’s up grades of choices. Your lineup is awesome. Though.

Just now trying Vidgo. The trial is currently 2 months at $10/month. Watching college football with Vidgo via firestick on gigabit fiber (Google) internet connection. No stops or buffering or any of the other issues reported by others. While it doesn’t have the features (DVR, etc) of the other streaming packages, it provides the access to ESPN (and other channels) quite well. Picture is HD and seamless.

We just tried VIdgo. It has ALL of the channels my husband & I like BUT it’s too glitchey. It’s constantly freezing, repeating itself or skipping ahead. We have high speed fiber optic internet so that is not the problem. They don’t have DVR, VOD & I couldn’t get the 72 hour playback to work. For now, we have termed the service & will stick with Philo. Maybe Vidgo will upgrade soon & we will give it another look.

NO DVR, NO CBS or NBC. In Fact, NO LOCALS. YouTubeTV a much better option!!!!!!!!!!!
