2024 Rose Bowl Schedule

The Rose Bowl is one of the New Year’s Six bowl games that are part of the College Football Playoff (CFP). This year, it is the first of two CFP semifinal games leading to the National Championship game. Before 2014, it was part of the BCS championship.

One point of confusion is that the Rose Bowl is both a game and a stadium. Rose Bowl Stadium — often referred to as America’s Stadium — is probably more famous than the game itself. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

The stadium is also important far beyond the NCAA. It was used for the 1984 Olympic Games as well as the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. UCLA Bruins football team and the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer club currently use the stadium. Although it has never been home to an NFL team, it has hosted the Super Bowl five times: 1977, 1980, 1983, 1987, and 1993.

The 2024 Rose Bowl will be played on New Year’s Day:

  • Date: Jan 1, 2024
  • Kickoff Time:
  • Location: Rose Bowl Stadium (Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California)
  • Channel: ESPN
  • Teams: Alabama (20) vs Michigan (27)
  • Last Year’s Results: Penn State (35) vs Utah (21)

The game broadcast will include the induction of the 2023 class of the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame:

  • Kirk Herbstreit: Broadcaster for ABC and ESPN who has called more Rose Bowl games than anyone in history; This year will be his 16th calling “The Granddaddy of Them All.
  • Lincoln Kennedy: Offensive tackle for the Washington Huskies who started in three consecutive Rose Bowl games. He went on to a long career in the NFL.
  • Cliff Montgomery: Captain of the Columbia Lions, which won the 1934 Rose Bowl game.

The usual ESPN crew will be presenting the game:

  • Chris Fowler — play-by-play
  • Kirk Herbstreit — analysis/color commentary
  • Holly Rowe — sideline reporting
  • Laura Rutledge — sideline reporting

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines have been very consistent this year going undefeated. They stayed ranked at Number 2 most of the season. It was only with the Georgia Bulldogs decline at the end of the season that they managed to grab the Number 1 spot.

The Crimson Tide’s road to the Rose Bowl was not as consistent even with a season record of 12-1. They started the season ranked Number 4 but fell all the way out of the Top 10 by mid-season. The week before the conference playoffs, they were still only ranked Number 8 but jumped up to Number 4 by beating Number 1 ranked Georgia in the SEC Championship.

Michigan Wolverines Personnel

Despite the sign-stealing scandal that sidelined him for much of the 2023 season, Jim Harbaugh is still head coach of the Wolverines. But it may not matter. Offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore was outstanding as interim head coach for 3 games. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter also stepped in for the first game of the season.

The Michigan offense is headed by quarterback JJ McCarthy. Michigan’s passing game is dominated by wide receivers Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson and tight end Colston Loveland. Running the ball is running back Blake Corum with support from Donovan Edwards.

But Michigan’s strength is in its defense, which is currently ranked Number 2 in the nation. The unit features enormous talent including linebackers Junior Colson, Michael Barrett, and Ernest Hausmann; defensive backs Mike Sainristil, Will Johnson, Josh Wallace, Rod Moore, and Makari Paige; and linemen Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Kris Jenkins, Braiden McGregor, Derrick Moore, and Josaiah Stewart.

Alabama Crimson Tide Personnel

Nick Saban is in his 17th season as head coach of the Crimson Tide. He’s garnered a record of 201-28 (in-conference 117-18). He has taken the team to the College Football Playoff National Championship six times and won it three. With him is offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and veteran defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

Sophomore Jalen Milroe is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the NCAA. He’s not only an excellent passer but a great runner — the Tide’s third-best rusher during the 2023 season.

He works with wide receivers Jermaine Burton and Isaiah Bond. Running back duties are shared between Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams. The squad is rounded out with tight end Amari Niblack (CJ Dippre did not play much this season).

Like Michigan, Alabama has a strong defense. The squad includes linebackers Jihaad Campbell, Deontae Lawson, Dallas Turner, Trezmen Marshall, and Chris Braswell; defensive backs Terrion Arnold, Kool-Aid McKinstry, Caleb Downs, and Malachi Moore; and defensive linemen Justin Eboigbe, Jaheim Oatis, and Tim Keenan III.
