With spending more time indoors thanks to social distancing, it’s no surprise that kids are spending more time on streaming services like Netflix. To help make parent’s lives easier, Netflix recently announced new security measures, allowing parents to set-up a four-digit PIN code for individual Netflix accounts.
Parents can set up PIN codes for individual profiles on their account. This means that parents can set up their child’s profile to require the PIN code to access the content. Additionally, parents can set the maturity ratings for titles that will be included in the profile’s content library. The new system allows parents to permit content based on title ratings. There are five main maturity ratings including all ages, 7+, 13+, 16+, and 18+.
This will help keep children from accessing adult content. Parents also have the ability to block specific, individual titles for individual profiles. Therefore, if there is a certain movie that you do not want your child watching, you can block it from their profile. What this means is that parents now have greater control over the type of content their child is viewing from the streaming giant.
While the PIN is a simple four-digit number, making any changes to the PIN requires access to parental controls. However, the only way to access parental controls is to enter the account password. This makes it more difficult to make changes to permissions than other streaming companies, such as YouTube Kids, that simply requires the answer to a math question.
Even though the new security feature is primarily targeted towards parents who want greater control over the content their child watches, regular users can also use the PIN code feature to keep out nosy roommates or family members from interfering with your profile, recommendations, viewing history, etc. by accidentally watching under your profile.
