Aer Lingus College Football Classic
NCAA has a long history with the country of Ireland. It takes back to 1988, when the Emerald Isle Classic became the first NCAA football game took place in Europe. It would later be called the Shamrock Classic, Croke Park Classic, and (since 2016) the Aer Lingus College Football Classic with sponsorship from the airline. Although it is always played in Dublin, the venue has changed over the years.
The 2023 edition of this game will be the eighth. But it has been played yearly since 2022 with the 2024 edition already scheduled to pit the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets against the Florida State Seminoles.
The first two editions of this game were played at Lansdowne Road as Emerald Isle Classic although when it returned in 2012, it was played at Aviva Stadium, where all events have been played since 2016. Croke Park was the location for the 1996 Shamrock Classic and (obviously) the 2014 Croke Park Classic.
This year features Notre Dame and Navy. These teams have twice played each other in Dublin (1996, 2012) with the Fighting Irish winning both times. The only other team to have played more than once in this series is the Boston College Eagles (1988, 2016). But next year, Yellow Jackets will have two appearances after their first in 2016.
