As one of the country’s oldest continuing sports, the Australian Grand Prix has been held in more than 20 venues since its first edition in 1985. After settling in Melbourne in 1996, the motorsport race has taken place there consistently every year since (except for two years during the pandemic), and it will continue in Melbourne until at least 2035.

Lex Davison and Michael Schumacher are the only drivers to have each won the Australian Grand Prix four times, while the 2015 race marked current World Champion Max Verstappen’s debut into Formula One.

The Australian Grand Prix takes place at the Albert Park Grand Prix circuit, which was modified before the 2022 race to reduce qualifying lap times by as much as five seconds. About the 2024 Australian GP

In 2022, Formula 1 made a highly anticipated return to Albert Park after a three-year hiatus. That year, the Australian Grand Prix, held on a revised layout of the Melbourne Grand Prix circuit, saw Charles Leclerc take the victory from pole position, while Max Verstappen was forced to retire due to mechanical issues. The race was filled with drama, with multiple red flag periods and a chaotic ending adding to the excitement.

Last year’s race at Albert Park was also memorable, as Max Verstappen secured a win for Red Bull, marking their first Australian Grand Prix victory in over a decade. The new track layout continued to provide thrills and kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout the race.

The Australian Grand Prix has a rich history as the traditional season-opener, hosting the first race of the year between 1996 and 2019. Since the sport’s return in 2022, the Albert Park race has been scheduled as the third race of the season (with the Bahrain Grand Prix as the first). The Melbourne race is expected to return to its season-opening slot in 2025.

Ahead of last year’s Australian Grand Prix, race organizers signed a contract extension with Formula 1 to ensure Albert Park remains on the calendar until at least 2037.
