Described as “the pinnacle of the UAE racing season”, the Dubai World Cup is the last event of the Dubai Racing Club 2023/24 racing season at Meydan Racecourse and the final race of Dubai World Cup Night. While the World Cup is a thoroughbred horse race, the evening features six Group 1 and three Group 2 fixtures for a total of nine races – eight Thoroughbred contests and one Purebred Arabian contest.
The inaugural Dubai World Cup was in 1996 and has been held annually ever since (except for 2020 when the event was canceled due to the pandemic). It took place at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse until 2009, but since 2010 has taken place at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on the last Saturday in March.
In 2019, the prize money for winning the World Cup was raised to $12 million, to make it the world’s richest horse race. During 2017 and 2018, this title was held by the Pegasus World Cup. Across all nine races during Dubai World Cup Night, the entire event carries a total purse of $30.5 million.

It’s a Group 1 flat race, meaning it’s the highest level of races, with a distance of 2,000 meters (around 10 furlongs). Entries are open to Thoroughbreds that are at least four years old from the Northern Hemisphere or at least three years old from the Southern Hemisphere.

Ushba Tesoro, a thoroughbred from Japan, won last year’s (2023) Dubai World Cup. Born in 2017, he was trained by Noboru Takagi and ridden by Japanese jockey Yuga Kawada in a time of :25.
