In a hurry? The 2023 BMW Championship — the last stop before the Tour Championship itself — is August 17-20, and will be broadcast over a combination of CBS and Golf Channel. The PGA Tour Championship will take place August 24-27 at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. We don’t have info yet on channels, but we expect the television broadcasts to roughly follow the BMW Championship.
Until a 2019 format change, it was possible to win the Tour Championship but lose the FedEx Cup — for example, in 2009 when Phil Mickelson won the Tour Championship and Tiger Woods won the FedEx Cup.
PGA FedEx Cup Playoffs Events and Schedule
The FedEx Cup Playoffs consist of three successive tournaments to determine the ultimate winner. Last year’s FedEx Cup Champion was Rory McIlroy, his third Tour Championship title. Other FedEx Champions from the past few years include Patrick Cantlay, Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, and Billy Horschel.
PGA golfers earn points throughout the season for events in which they participate (more if they win). With the initial field reduced to 70 this year (from 125), the competition will be fierce and will probably come right down to the final round. There are three playoff events, starting with the St. Jude Championship.
FedEx St. Jude Championship (Aug 10-13)
This year’s golf tournament, played at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, was won by Lucas Glover. Glover, who was ranked 49th going into the playoffs, edged out 13th-ranked Patrick Cantlay for the top spot.
Meanwhile, the top two ranked for the playoffs, Masters Champion Jon Rahm and current PGA #1 Scottie Scheffler, placed way down the list. They had such a massive lead from the regular season that they remain at the top of the leaderboard, but that lead has significantly narrowed and anything can happen.

BMW Championship (Aug 17-20)
The BMW Championship, formerly known as the Western Open, is the oldest regular PGA Tour event outside of the Four Majors. It was first played in 1899, and is often (though not always) played in the Chicago area. This year’s venue is the North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois, but last year it was played at the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware.
At the time of this writing, Round 1 of 4 has been completed, with Rory McIlroy tied for the lead with Brian Harman. Last year’s winner was Patrick Cantlay, the second year in a row he won it.
BMW Championship Schedule
Primary coverage of the BMW Championship on Thursday and Friday will be on The Golf Channel from to . On Saturday and Sunday, Golf Channel will carry early afternoon coverage and CBS will cover the later holes.

Tour Championship (Aug 24-27)
The Tour Championship, as mentioned, will be held at the East Lake Country Club in Atlanta. Since 2013, it’s the final event of the PGA Tour before the next season starts in the fall.
It is likely that the television coverage — which has followed the same format as other major golf events this year — will be similar to the BMW Championship.
That means that Golf Channel will air Thursday, Friday, and the earlier holes on Saturday and Sunday, while CBS will pick up with the later afternoon sessions on Saturday and Sunday. The actual coverage schedule should be available after the BMW Championship concludes — check back for updates.
The prize money is pretty insane: $500,000 for every participant who makes it this far, more for the top ten, and a cool $18 million for the champion.
