NBA Christmas games are a long and storied tradition, going all the way back to the league’s founding in the late 1940s. The National Basketball Association is the only major American league that plays on Christmas Day — even the NCAA typically takes the holiday off.
Since 2008, five games are scheduled, making for an all-day Christmas basketball bonanza. And they’re all televised on ESPN, making Sling TV your least expensive choice for watching them.
2023 NBA Christmas Games Schedule and Overview
Unlike the Thanksgiving Day NFL matchups, there are no established teams that traditionally play on Christmas Day. Relatively recently (since 1995), the reigning champs from the previous season always feature in the NBA Christmas Day games. You can also expect to see at least one MVP per team per game.
The five games scheduled for Christmas 2023 are:

Interestingly, while the matchups are different, it’s almost the same slate as last season’s Christmas, with the Eastern Conference champions the Heat replacing the Grizzlies.
Milwaukee Bucks @ New York Knicks
One of the first teams up this year, the New York Knicks, played in the inaugural Christmas Day game in 1947, defeating the Providence Steamrollers 89-75. It was the Knicks’ first win, and they would go on to feature in almost every Christmas schedule since.
Despite the Bucks having been around since 1965, this will be only the second time the teams are meeting on Christmas. Their last contest ended with a sad Madison Square Garden when the Bucks beat the Knicks 109-95.

Golden State Warriors @ Denver Nuggets
The Warriors took the title in 2022, and the Nuggets snatched it away in 2023. As the defending NBA champions, the Nuggets have a lot to live up to in this clash of Western Conference rivals.

The rivalry between these teams is legendary, and at stake this season is a record 18 championships, which both teams are poised to win. This is the first time the two teams have met on Christmas since 2008, when Kobe Bryant led the Lakers to victory 92-83. Plan on overtime for this epic East vs West showdown.

Philadelphia 76ers @ Miami Heat
The Heat defeated the Sixers in the 2022 Conference Semifinals, and don’t think for a second that Philly’s forgotten last season’s playoffs. It may be the City of Brotherly Love, but Philly fans have long memories, and Miami getting smoked by Denver in the NBA finals was cold comfort.
It doesn’t help that one of the Heat’s best players, Jimmy Butler, used to play for the 76ers. At least James Harden is out of the picture.

Dallas Mavericks @ Phoenix Suns
Former teammates on now on opposing sides of a major rivalry? We smell drama! Last time the Mavs and Suns met was the first face off between Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. The Suns took that one 130-126 — now Dallas gets a rematch.
