FAQ

What is CONCACAF?

CONCACAF, pronounced CON-ca-caff (rhymes with “Tonka calf”), stands for Confederation Of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football. It’s one of the six continental-based organizations that oversees soccer at the top level under FIFA, the international soccer authority. The other five are AFC (Asia and Australia), CAF (Africa), CONMEBOL (South America), OFC (Oceania), and UEFA (Europe).

What happened to the CONCACAF Champions League?

The CONCACAF Champions League and Champions Cup are the same competition. For the first 47 years of the tournament, it was called the Champions Cup. In 2008, it was expanded from eight teams to 24, and the name was changed to “Champions League” to reflect the larger contest. Now it has been expanded again to 27 teams, and the format completely revamped. To signal the extensive changes, CONCACAF reverted the name back to the Champions Cup.

Who won the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League?

In 2023, Club León of Liga MX prevailed over LAFC in the Final. In the previous format, the Final was also a two-leg home/away series and León won both, scoring a total of 3-1 over the relatively new expansion LA club. Neither of the teams had previously won a CONCACAF Champions League. This year, León failed to qualify and will be unable to defend its title.

Recent winners of the CONCACAF Champions League are:

  • 2023: León (Mexico)

  • 2021: Monterrey (Mexico)

All three teams, along with the 2024 winners, will qualify for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, to be held in the US.

Who has won the most CONCACAF Champions League/Cup tournaments?

Out of 58 previous contests, Mexico’s Liga MX holds far and away the best record with 38 total titles. Mexico City’s América club are the leading team, with seven wins to their name. Mexico is also the only country whose teams have successfully defended the title, i.e., won more than one year in a row. The second-best record is Primera División of Costa Rica, with six wins.
