The first major tennis tournament of the year is the Australian Open. It is also the first Grand Slam. It occurs every January at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia.
This tournament was started in 1905 as the Australasian Championships. It became the Australian Open in 1927 and has been one of the biggest tournaments in the world since then.
Like all major tennis tournaments, the Australian Open features a lot of matches occurring at the same time. As a result, coverage is spread out over several TV channels: ESPN, ESPN2, and the Tennis Channel. ESPN, however, will likely cover the finals.
