Streaming TV on Xbox LIVE

What is Xbox

The Xbox is a sixth-generation video game console manufactured by Microsoft. Ultimately, Microsoft is looking to turn your television into a web access device, and so is looking beyond the gaming industry. The Xbox 360 Live platform now allows you to watch a broad array of TV shows and other content through their gaming consoles.

Microsoft describes the deal as ‘a new era in TV’ and the Xbox 360 will now aim to continue to prove that it is not only a games console, but also a connected media hub with a wealth of content.

Nearly 40 “world class TV and entertainment providers” are coming to Xbox Live, including Bravo, Comcast, HBO GO and Syfy in the US. These additions join Sky, ESPN and Hulu, which are already available on the Xbox online service. In June 2011, Microsoft also announced that live TV, YouTube and Bing were in the works for Xbox 360, promising to increase the amount of content on Xbox Live “by a factor of ten” this year.

Here’s a sample list of Entertainment Partners (Channels) on Xbox 360 available to US residents:

  • Comcast: Only Xfinity On Demand
  • HBO GO
  • NBC Universal: Content from Bravo, SyFy and more.
  • Manga Entertainment: Very big catalog of streaming anime
  • Crackle: Sony Pictures Entertainment backlog of movies
  • EPIX: MGM, Lionsgate and Paramount catalog of movies
  • UFC: Streaming fights and interactivity  like ESPN
  • Verizon: 26 channels from the Verizon FiOS
  • ESPN
  • Facebook
  • Hulu +
  • iHeartRadio (Clear Channel)
  • Netflix
  • Twitter
  • UFC

Microsoft also made friends with some International content providers as well such as BBC (UK), Canal+ (France/Spain), MediaSet (Italy), and SBS On Demand (Australia)

Bottom Line: More and more devices are hitting the market every day – looking to cash in on the internet TV revolution. The Xbox is a solid investment because it is not only a great game console and online media hub,  but it is also a full-featured DVD player. Have you looked into how much you could save by canceling your cable bill?
