About the San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers had a tremendous season in 2023-24, ever since struggling to a 3-4 record through their first seven games. At that point, a trip south to LA to face the Rams resulted in a 31-14 win, and the franchise’s bye week the next week was followed by a home win, 22-16, over the other LA-based team, the Chargers.

And the team just kept winning from that point on, running its winning streak all the way to 12 before falling to the Eagles, who were cruising at that point, by a 31-7 score. Before that defeat, the 49ers eliminated the Seahawks, 41-23, and the Cowboys, 19-12, from postseason play.

“Unfortunately, we’re playing the Niners.”

Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks head coach, before the Super Wild Card Weekend matchup

San Francisco’s hopes in Philly on Sunday had taken a significant blow early on, when quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury in the first quarter. He had surprised this season by going from being the last pick of the draft, from being “Mr Irrelevant,” to leading his team to within a win of a Super Bowl appearance.

Purdy briefly returned in the second half but only attempted a couple of passes. After the game, he said that he “couldn’t throw more than 5, 10 yards” after he was injured.

However, hopes are high that Purdy will recover from this injury and help lead the 49ers to another solid season in 2023, possibly including a run to the Super Bowl.

The 49ers brought a 10-game winning streak into the playoffs. And they made it to the conference championship, which they lost decisively to the Philadelphia Eagles.
