Oklahoma Sooners Football
The Oklahoma Sooners are currently members of the Big 12 conference, but that will change in 2025 when they transfer to the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
The school is primarily known for its football program, which plays at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Stadium in Norman. Since the football program’s inception in 1895, it has participated in 30 bowl games, won 50 conference titles, and seven national championships.
Brent Venables starts his second season as head coach after a disappointing 6-7 season last year. The team still managed to make it to the Cheez-It Bowl, which they lost to the Florida State Seminoles 32-35.
Based on the preseason rankings from the AP poll, Oklahoma is No 20 in the nation. Oklahoma does slightly better (No 19) in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.
The offense is very strong with returning quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Its squad on running back is very young with sophomore Jovantae Barnes the only one with substantial play last year.
On wide receiver are Jalil Farooq and Michigan transfer Andrel Anthony who looks promising despite little play last season. Davon Mitchell has agreed to join the Sooners as tight end, but that won’t happen until next season. Until then, Austin Stogner is a strong player at that position.
Oklahoma’s main issue this season will be its defense. It was largely responsible for the poor performance last season. Still, the squad has a lot of talent including linebacker Danny Stutsman. Dasan McCullough also returns. And impressive young outside linebacker, Dasan McCullough, has transferred from the Indiana Hoosiers.

In response to these changes, the Big 12 is adding 4 new teams: BYU Cougars, Central Florida Knights, Cincinnati Bearcats, and Houston Cougars.
