Why is the Idaho Potato Bowl famous?
The Idaho Potato Bowl was originally called the Humanitarian Bowl when it was first played in 1997. In 2011, the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) made a six-year sponsorship deal that allowed them to rename the game to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. The IPC then extended this deal in 2017 for a further five years.
It was briefly called the MPC Computers Bowl between 2004 and 2006 when it was sponsored by the MPC Corporation.
What is the history of the Idaho Potato Bowl?
The Idaho Potato Bowl was first played in 1997 when Cincinnati defeated Utah State. It has always been played at Albertsons Stadium on the Boise State University campus in Idaho. The Mountain West Conference has been the host since 2013, with one exception in 2018 when independent BYU was invited to replace a Mountain West team. That year saw BYU win 49-18 against the Western Michigan Broncos, earning Zach Wilson MVP for completing all 18 of his passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns. Wilson has since gone on to play for the New York Jets in the NFL.
Typically, the Idaho Potato Bowl is between a Mountain West team and a Mid-American Conference (MAC) team.
