Texas Tech Raiders vs California Golden Bears

The Independence Bowl pits Big 12 conference against the Pac-12 conference — maybe for the last time. Regardless, it will feature two modest teams.

Texas Tech ended in the middle of the Big 12 with a 6-6 (5-4 in-conference) record. They ended the season reasonably well, even defaulting Number 16 Kansas.

Cal had a similar season with a 6-6 (4-5 in-conference) record. It ended with three wins although they were all weak Pac-12 teams.

Texas Tech Raiders Personnel

The Raiders are led by head coach Joey McGuire. He’s only been with the team for two seasons. That’s also true of offensive coordinator Zach Kittley and defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter.

Quarterback Behren Morton has led the offense for the latter half of the season. With him are running back Tahj Brooks, wide receivers Xavier White, Jerand Bradley, Myles Price, Coy Eakin, Jordan Brown, and Drae McCray, and tight ends Mason Tharp and Baylor Cupp.

The defense includes linebackers Ben Roberts, Jesiah Pierre, Myles Cole, Jacob Rodriguez, Joseph Adedire, Charles Esters III, and Steve Linton, defensive backs Bralyn Lux, Rayshad Williams, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Malik Dunlap, CJ Baskerville, and Tyler Owens, and linemen Jaylon Hutchings and Tony Bradford Jr.

Cal Golden Bears Personnel

Head coach Justin Wilcox is in his seventh season with the Golden Bears during which the team has struggled. He is supported by offensive coordinator Jake Spavital and defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon.

The offense is led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza. With him are running back Jaydn Ott, wide receivers Jeremiah Hunter, Trond Grizzell, Taj Davis, and tight end Jack Endries.

The defense features linebackers Kaleb Elarms-Orr, Cade Uluave, Xavier Carlton, Jackson Sirmon, and David Reese, defensive backs Patrick McMorris, Jeremiah Earby, Nohl Williams, Lu-Magia Hearns III, Craig Woodson, and Matthew Littlejohn, and linemen Ricky Correia and Brett Johnson.
