How to Watch Local News Online Without Cable: At a Glance

Depending on your area you have a selection of local channels available to you. The ones that often offer news coverage include ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, and NBC.

You might also have Spanish language channels like Univision, Telemundo, and UniMas, as well.

Most streaming services offer some type of local coverage that will allow you to stream the local news without cable. Two of the services that offer coverage in most parts of the country include fuboTV and Hulu with Live TV.

fuboTV: fuboTV comes with 100+ channels. When it comes to streaming local news, many areas will have access to NBC, CBS, FOX, and CW. ABC is not available. You’ll also have over 30 sports channels and even more general entertainment options. This package is $64.99 a month. You’ll get the first month at a discount though, for just $45. fuboTV offers a free 7-day trial.

Hulu Live: Hulu Live is another solid option when it comes to local live news. ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC are included in most homes. You may also have additional local channels in your package depending on your area. Over 60 channels are included at a price of $64.99 per month. More channels can be added for a fee. Hulu Live is a contract-free service, so you can cancel at any point. A free 7-day trial is offered to new subscribers to help get you started.

Watch Local News using a Streaming Service

Streaming local channels doesn’t have to be difficult. These days, it’s not that hard to stream any content you want whether it’s local news or a popular cable channel.

There are legal options for streaming that ensure that you don’t have to be forced into a cable contract unless you want to be. People often choose streaming over cable because it’s cheaper, you get a similar package with many popular channels, and there are no contracts.

You can sign up to any streaming service and cancel whenever you want. This allows you a risk-free way to shop around and find the right service for you.

Streaming is a lot like cable, though you have more ways to watch TV. Instead of a cable box, streaming services use streaming devices. Most services work with as many devices as possible.

Some popular streaming devices include Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV devices, iOS and Android mobile devices, computers, gaming consoles, smart TVs, and more.

Antenna Options that Offer a Local News Live Stream

All of the streaming options you’ve learned about are definitely good options for nationwide channels. That said, when it comes to local news coverage, how good they are will depend on where you live.

If you’re in a major or even a medium sized city, you’re probably covered. If you’re in a small town or more rural area you might have a harder time finding coverage. A digital antenna can be an incredibly useful tool if that’s the case.

The benefits of a digital antenna are that you can get access to more local channels, the cost is inexpensive, and once you buy the antenna, you can watch the local channels you get for free.

If you do not own your own antenna, here are some options to get you started:

The Moho Leaf 30 works well for indoor use. Some key features include:

  • Find local channels in a 40-mile search range
  • Cheap and easy to install
  • Great reviews from hundreds of satisfied users
  • Will fit in small spaces and apartments
  • 4k compatible

The Winegard Elite 764.990 is a great option if you want an outdoor antenna. This antenna features:

  • A search range of up to 70-miles
  • One of the top choices for users in small towns and rural communities
  • Great reviews
  • A reliable outdoor option
  • Includes a digital amplifier to make sure you get the best quality signals

If these options don’t work for you, there are hundreds of digital antennas out there and one of them will be right for you. The good news is that most antennas are reasonably priced, so once you make a small purchase, you’ll be set to enjoy some free TV.

Other Ways to Stream Local News without Cable

We’ve looked at paid streaming services and digital antennas, which can get you free local news and programming. Now it’s time to look into free online options.

A wide variety of local affiliates will offer free local news live streaming on their website. You just go to their website and click the “Watch Live” link or on some websites the live feed begins immediately. You can look up the stations in your area to find your local news options.

Some local news affiliates that offer live news on their websites for free include:

I have previewed many tv streaming offerings and currently subscribe to several of the multi channel services. I can honestly state that Youtubetv satisfies all my local and national news, sports, and entertainment channels the same time they’re normally broadcast.

At $50.00 a month, they offer more on demand and unlimited DVR access than SlingTV or any other paid channel services, including adding fee paid premium programs.

Just look and see what they have to offer bec it’s just like the comfortable cable or satellite TV viewing once enjoyed.
I use the Roku already installed in the tv to add most viewing apps.
