Patriotic Movies available on your Favorite Streaming Service
Happy 4th of July. Today, millions of people are figuring out their plans to celebrate America’s birthday. Some are planning barbecues, others will look to avoid authorities while they shoot off fireworks, and then there those who want to avoid the crowds and would like nothing more than to ratchet up their patriotism to an 11 by watching patriotic movies all day long.
If you love America, but hate paying for cable television, then stick around; because today we’re going to take a look at 5 Patriotic Movies to Watch on Netflix for the 4th of July. Let’s check ’em out!
1) Team America: World Police
Brought to you by the guys that gave us South Park,Team America: World Police is a hilarious and irreverent satire that simultaneously lampoons and uplifts the often exaggerated hyper-patriotic post 9/11 America. Adding to the already hilarious script is the fact that the whole movie is shot using puppets and obviously fake models, ala Thunderbirds-style.
With a hard R rating, be sure to usher the kids out of the room for this movie, because you’re about to turn Patriot Meter up to F**k Yeah.
2) A League of Their Own
With the exception of Apple Pie, there’s nothing more patriotic than baseball and there are few baseball movies that are better than “A League of Their Own“. Starring Tom Hanks, Gina Davis, Rosie O’ Donnell, and even Madonna; A League of Their Own is the fictional story about an All-American Girls Professional Baseball League; formed to entertain the masses while most of the fighting-age men were off fighting World War II.
Rated PG, this movie is decidedly more family friendly than Team America.
WARNING: Just because there’s no crying in baseball, doesn’t mean you won’t shed a tear once or twice while watching this movie. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of laughs to make up for it.
For all you history buffs out there, I present to you one of the most iconic films of all time: Patton. You may not have seen it before, but I can guarantee you that you’ve at lease seen the famous Flag Scene and/or some kind of parody of it. Follow General George S. Patton through World War II as he fights the Nazis up and down Europe while reminding you that America is the greatest country on the face of the Earth.
Despite being a war movie, Patton is rated PG so it’s safe to leave on with the kids around.
4) Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump is one of the most celebrated movies of all time and for good reason (also my favorite on this list). Forrest Gump is not only the story of a simple man, it’s also the story of the United States in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Follow Forrest as he meets presidents, fights in Vietnam, and accidentally invents the smiley face. As exaggerated as some these events are, very few films capture the feeling of the times more than Forrest Gump; which is what makes it a perfect movie for the 4th of July.
5) We were Soldiers
Based off of the best selling book, “We Were Soldiers” tells the story of the battle of Ia Drang, the first major battle of the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore leads a battalion of 400 men a mission to eliminate North Vietnamese resistance, only to find out that they stumbled upon an enemy base camp with over 4,000 enemy soldiers. Pinned down and behind enemy lines, their only hope for survival is to rely on each other and fight like hell.
The movie is Rated R for extreme violence, so you might want to keep the young ones away during this one.
